OUR HISTORY

  • The autonomous regulation of industrial property protection begins after the establishment of the Republic of Macedonia as an independent country.
  • The Ministry of Development took the authority of intellectual property protection on 24.04.1992, and since then applications for industrial property protection could be submitted.
  • The first national law was implemented on 15.07.1993, while on 28.03.1994 the bylaws where also implemented.
  • The Republic of Macedonia became a member of the World Intellectual Property Organization on 23.07.1993, by filing a Declaration of acceptance of previously ratified international conventions and agreements.
  • The membership of the Republic of Macedonia in these conventions and agreements dated back to 08.09.1991, the independence day of the country.
  • The office for industrial property protection was established as an affiliated authority of the Ministry of Development on 01.12.1993, with a status of separate legal entity.
  • With the adoption of the Law of organization and operation of the state administration, the institution continued to operate under the name of Protection of Industrial Property Bureau, as a body within the Ministry of Economy, with a status of separate legal entity. In June 2002, a new Law of Industrial Property was adopted. This law was implemented on 01.01.2004 and is in compliance with international standards and fundamental principal of the Agreement on Trade - Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS Agreement) of the World trade Organization and European Union regulations.
  • With the amendment of the Law in March 2004, the status and the name of the institution was changed to State Office of Industrial Property, which became an administrative organization with a status of an independent state administrative body.
  • The bylaws were adopted according to the provisions of the Law. The Law was amended in March 2006, for further alignment with the EU regulations and strengthening of the Industrial Property Protection measures.
  • Every year, the office of Industrial Property, awards a prize for the best invention i.e. "Patent of the Year".
